Considering Weaving on a Rigid Hettle Loom...Need Lots of information!?
I am interested in Weaving rugs, place mats, and such. I already knit, crochet, and sew. I've been looking at options and decided that my best bet would be a rigid hettle loom. My faviorite(mostly because it would weave large mats) is the Ashford Weaving Rigid Heddle Loom. I need some tips about weaving itself, tips, and if the Ashford sounds good for me.

Look for a local weaver's guild and join it. Then you can look at a number of different looms and talk to different weavers about what they like and why. Take a class in weaving before committing to a loom for yourself. Many guilds will have looms you can rent monthly to try out. My guild will rent them for just $10 per month.
I'm a spinner rather than a weaver (my guild is a spinners and weavers guild). The first wheel I fell in love with, I rented for a month. At the end of the month, I had already outgrown it. I tried two more before settling on the one I decided to purchase. It happened to be the same wheel I used in my beginning spinning class and in that class I HATED it. So if I had purchased a wheel at the very start of learning about spinning, I would have wound up with that wheel that was easy to use, but very limited in its abilities instead of the one that turned out to be the perfect fit for me.
I've found guild members to be exceptionally nice people, excited about their craft and eager to share and help. It's easy to ask to try a member's equipment and discuss what they like and dislike about it and make a truly informed choice. Our guild has "study groups" that meet monthly on various topics where people share new techniques or other discoveries or they have a guest speaker in on some topic, etc. If you lived locally, I could just thumb through my guild directory and find members who share the same interests (we're all coded by the fiber arts we do) and introduce you. That's what a guild is for.
