Unusual antique candle: where is it from?
I've inherited an unusual candle and would like to know more about it. Can anyone help? Sorry, can't photograph it yet. It's very old. Imagine hundreds of individual candle strands in a large bulbous twist around an empty centre (maybe it once contained another larger solid candle?). The strands are in cream, maybe they were white once. A paper picture of the Virgin Mary & baby Jesus surrounded by gilt wax is on one side, so it looks as if it was made to be viewed from the front only. In theory all the tiny candle strands can be lit, but as it's obviously an antique I don't want to do it. I have Austrian relatives through which I've inherited it, but I don't know the name, from where, how old it is, etc. Can anybody help me?
Sounds like it could be Austrian or even Spanish although without seeing it it is a bit of a shot in the dark. It also has a Victorian flavour from your description because they did very elaborate things with wax decorations. It does sound unusual but European candles could be very elaborate at times. The Virgin Mary paper decoration was popular in many places and it could well have been made to view from only one side. If there had been a paper decoration on the other side, you should be able to see bits of wax where it had broken off. If you can email me the photo I'd like to see it. I was a museum curator for Decorative Arts for five years or so and have identified stuff before but without seeing it, its a little hard to tell.
