Outdoor Furniture Cushions - Care and Cleaning by Lydia Graham
In order to be able to be left outside through all the seasons and not be damaged by summer weather there is a coating or treatment on the strong synthetic fabrics used in most new cushion covers. The easy care materials used these days are water repellant and mildew resistant but feel like cotton but are known as polyacrylics or are open-weave polyesters similar to what tire cord fibers are made of and are coated with PVC (polyvinyl chloride), or are made of vinyl making all of them very easy care.
In order to not hold water and be mildew resistant the fillings are made with polyester. Having buttons where water can drain out of the bottom of the cushion is best when polyester thread is used to stitch the seams of the cushions.
In order to take proper care of cushions when youâre wearing suntan lotion it is best to cover the cushion with a towel. Otherwise the fabric will be stained by the chemical reaction caused when the sunâs ultraviolet rays hits the fabric with the suntan lotion on it.
Cushions can be dried a lot faster when taken out of their frames and stood up on their sides allowing water to drain out & not be allowed to collect in them when they get wet from a very heavy downpour of rain.
Be careful as some cushions are not completely weather proof if they are filled with urethane foam. Fabrics not mentioned above used for covers, or those made from cotton arenât weather proof either. Protecting cushions from rain is the best practice.
Use mild detergent suds and make sure you rinse thoroughly when you wash cushions. Other procedures are sometimes found on labels where their directions will be found. Removing soil with a hose is recommended by some manufacturers. When storing your cushions for the winter make sure they have been fully dried out. Using plastic wrapping for storage is not recommended at all. Find a dry place to store your cushions not subject to any dampness or humidity during the off-season.
A mixture of 3 gallons of warm water with 1 cup of powdered laundry detergent and 1 cup of liquid chlorine bleach mixed together at the end of the summer should be used for a manufacturerâs recommended âdeep cleaningâ. Letting the cushions soak for 30 minutes so any mildew inside of them can be destroyed after flushing them with the solution on a paved driveway or on your patio is also recommended.
Use a synthetic sponge on the cushions that are made with acrylics and a plastic scrub brush on any coated polyester cushions to scrub stains out if they are left on your cushions. Use cold water to thoroughly rinse them. Before storing them place them in the sun and dry for several days so that they get dried all the way through. If you have new synthetic cushions only use this procedure if the manufacturer recommends it. Always dilute the chlorine as directed because you should never use undiluted full strength chlorine bleach on them.
