Longaberger Baskets and Other Home Products â Longaberger Review by Randy Myers
The early roots and traditions that the Longaberger Company had when they formed 35 years ago are still evident in today's business. The company's mission statement is; "To Stimulate a Better Quality of Life," and the company continues to hold true to that goal.
The company continues to offer a variety of handcrafted items, such as wrought iron accessories, pottery and baskets but has chosen the direct marketing sales model which now numbers more than 45,000 Home Consultants selling the Longaberger product line directly from their homes.
History of the Company
The Longaberger family moved to the bustling village of Dresden, Ohio just at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains in 1896. The most popular container of choice for carrying pottery ware at that time was the basket. The J.W. Longaberger artistic trademark basket design was learned while serving as a full-time apprentice at a local factory. In 1927, J.W. met and married Bonnie Jean Gist while still working at the factory.
The factory's doors were closed due to the Great Depression forcing J.W. to find work at the local paper mill but he continued to make baskets in his free time. J.W. and Bonnie bought the old basket factory in 1936 and renamed it The Ohio Ware Basket Company. Bonnie and J.W. had 12 children during their life together. Dave, the 5th born child, was not only disadvantaged by his family's low economic status but also because he had epilepsy and a bad stutter. However, Dave was ambitious, and as a young boy, he was constantly taking odd jobs for money.
As Dave went on in life, he served two years in the Army and ended up driving a bread truck. After his daughter Tami was born, Dave and his wife purchased the Dairy Bar in Dresden, as well as an old grocery. They remodeled the building and reopened it as Dresden IGA Foodliner, and the two businesses helped provide for his growing family. The trend toward popularity of baskets in the 1970s caused Dave to ask his father, J.W. to make baskets to be sold in the store. They couldn't keep enough baskets in stock because they became such a fad that they sold out immediately. Unhappily, J.W. passed away just as the baskets started to become popular.
To honor his father, Dave opened J.W. Handwoven Baskets in 1976. He was even able to buy and use the old woolen mill that his mother worked in when he was a child. He continued to expand the basket business, attempting to sell them in various locales. In 1978, the direct sales model of Longaberger baskets was started when Dave recognized the best showcase for the baskets was home consultants.
Dave's daughter Tami joined the company in 1984 and was appointed president in just 10 years. She influenced the company to become more diversified into other home lifestyle areas. The company is now the leading manufacturer of handcrafted home-style products including baskets.
