Guitarist Royce Campbell lays down exquisite ballad thoughts (indystar)
The title has the pristine straightforwardness of the music: "All Ballads and
a Bossa" (Moon Cycle Records). It consists of 10 songs with the former
Indianapolis jazz star Royce Campbell leading a quartet with bassist Tom
Baldwin, pianist Tony Nalker and drummer Tony Martucci, recorded in
Springfield, Va., on May 8, 2010. The group's hand-in-glove rapport serves
these pieces well. Campbell's originals ("Little Bossa," "Someone for Me" and
"It's Not the Same Without You") hold their heads up well among such sterling
company as "Never Let Me Go," Billy Strayhorn's "A Flower is a Lovesome Thing"
and two Styne-Cahn evergreens, "I Fall in Love Too Easily" and "I Guess I'll
Hang My Tears Out to Dry," among other gems. Baldwin takes a fine solo in the
last-named song, and there are a couple of extended outings for the pianist,
who complements the guitarist at all points. Campbell's style is romantic
without gush, and capable of wit - the trill at the end of the first phrase
