Choosing New Carpet For Your Living Room by Art Gib
My husband and I have had the luxury of moving into a condominium that was only recently re-carpeted. It is a beautiful half-shag (what I just called "shaggy," though it's not true shag carpet) in varied tones of beige and dark brown. I don't think my vague description does it justice, but it works very well with all the varied designs of the condo.
However, my husband and I are also preparing to adopt a puppy, so it has occurred to me that a second redecoration may be in order before the year is out! Needless to say, I have been wondering what sort of carpet would look best in our beautiful, spacious living room.
That is actually one of the first things you need to consider when you want to install new carpet, particularly in your living room--where the living really happens. You also need to decide whether or not you are going to redesign the entire room, or if it is only the carpet that needs to be replaced.
Once you have made that decision, you of course need to also look at the space in your living room and the lighting--both natural and artificial. That means you should think about how the carpet with look morning, midday, and evening.
There are some shades that will look fantastic in the sunlight streaming through the window in the morning, but will look bland, dull, or just plain ugly under lamplight--and vice-versa. So try to consider these things carefully.
Thinking about the space--whether it is tight or expansive--should also affect your decision. If you want a smaller space to seem larger and more open than it actually is, then lighter colors can help you achieve that. Just the opposite is true if you have a large living space that you want to make seem more intimate--steer toward darker shades.
Think about existing or new furniture. I hate to say it, but while our couch coordinates well with this beautiful carpet, our bookshelves, desk, and entertainment center do not. If you are redecorating or even constructing a new home, you have the luxury of bringing things together better.
If not, you may want to find a carpet which is like a canvas. Many light colors--like beige--lend themselves to many different kinds of furniture settings. However, if you have a specific ambiance in mind and want to pair the carpet with particular pieces of furniture, you will be better equipped to make a final selection.
Don't rush yourself. And always remember, as you hunt for that perfect, beautiful carpet, that a sample is far less intense than a whole floor covering. So don't commit to installation until you are sure!
