How can I tell if it is real ivory or not?
I bought 3 figurines from an estate sale. They appear to be antique Chinese ivory but I am unsure. There are carvings underneath all of them that look like Chinese writing and on the side "KIMA" or "KINA" is carved. They're a nice size, weight wise. How can I tell if it is legitimately ivory or not? Help!
First look to see if there are growth rings on what would be a cut end. Ivory has them.
Next heat a needle in a flame and poke the hot needle in a spot out of sight. Plastic smells like burning plastic. Ivory smells more like burning hair.
